abstract | The present invention relates to a method for oxidizing pantolactone to ketopantolactone, comprising performing oxidation using periodate in an aqueous solvent system and in microwave in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst. Ketopantolactone is an important intermediate in the production of pantothenic acid, which is a member of the vitamin B complex and is a component of coenzyme A. Asymmetric hydrogenation of ketopantolactone affords (D)-(-)-pantolactone, from which pantocenic acid can be prepared. |
