titleOfInvention Oxidation treatment of a recycle stream in production of acetic acid by methanol carbonylation
abstract The present invention provides a process and system for the production of acetic acid wherein the catalytic carbonylation of methanol with carbon monoxide yields a reaction product stream comprising acetic acid and a small amount of acetaldehyde. The acetaldehyde content in the reaction product stream is reduced by oxidation, which converts all or at least a portion of the acetaldehyde in the stream into acetic acid, or even CO 2 and H 2 O. The adverse effects of acetaldehyde can then be reduced by directing the oxidized stream to the purification compartment, the reaction compartment or both. An advantage of the present invention over conventional methods is that it reduces the need to dispose of acetaldehyde as waste and improves the overall system efficiency in the production of acids.
