titleOfInvention | Water curable polyurethane compositions and uses thereof |
abstract | Increased awareness of health, safety and the environment has motivated the development of new and improved water cure technologies for formulating, manufacturing and using water curable compositions (also referred to as water derived urethanes in the art). gave. The present invention is based, at least in part, on the concept of formulating NCO functional resins used in water curable compositions from one or more polyisocyanate components comprising one or more sterically hindered isomers of diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI). do. These isomers have a combination of suitable moisture reactivity and extremely low vapor pressures that bring a number of advantages. Because these isomers are low volatility, all or part of the TDI content of conventional water-derived urethane formulations can be replaced with these isomers. A particularly preferred embodiment is characterized by the complete removal of TDI, 100% solids, no solvents, and essentially zero emissions of VOCs for isocyanates. The composition is substantially more environmentally friendly than conventional formulations. |
