The present invention relates to a process for carbonylating ethylenically unsaturated compounds with carbon monoxide and co-reactants. The carbonylation reaction is carried out in the presence of a novel catalyst containing the following components:n n n a) source of Group VIII metal;n n n b) as a bidentate diphosphine of formula (I)n n n n n n n n Wherein R 1 represents a divalent radical which bonds with a phosphorus atom, which is an optionally substituted 2-phospha-tricyclo [3.3.1.1 {3.7}] decyl group or derivative thereof, at least one carbon atom being a heteroatom Substituted ("2-PA"group); R 2 and R 3 independently represent monovalent radicals of up to 20 atoms, or combine to form bivalent radicals of up to 20 atoms; A 1 and A 2 independently represent an optionally substituted alkylene group; R is a bimodal diphosphine characterized in that it represents an optionally substituted aromatic group; Andn n n c) source of negative ions. |
