abstract One aspect of the present invention is directed to a method for funnilinizing demyelined axons by treating demyelinated axons with oligodendrocyte progenitor cells under conditions that allow for funlining of axons. Another aspect of the invention relates to a myelin loss or oligodendrocyte loss by administering a oligodendrocyte progenitor cell to a subject under conditions effective to treat a condition mediated by myelin loss or oligodendrocyte loss. A method of treating a subject with a mediated condition. A further aspect of the invention relates to an in vitro method for identifying and isolating oligodendrocyte progenitor cells from a mixed population containing other mammalian brain or spinal cord cell types. This method involves removing neurons and neuronal progenitor cells from the mixed population to produce a treated mixed population. The oligodendrocyte progenitor cells are then separated from the treated mixed population to form a population rich in oligodendrocyte progenitor cells.
