titleOfInvention Internet protocol based wireless communication arrangements
abstract PDAs and mobile phones and mobile devices can be connected to the Internet or other IP-based networks using WLAN infrastructure and WPAN infrastructure or cellular systems such as GPRS or 3G. Multi-mode hardware, such as combination chipsets that support this standard approach, is also becoming available. According to the present invention, a so-called Multi-Standard Wireless Adaptation Layer (MWAL) wireless network driver software architecture is proposed which needs to efficiently switch from one wireless standard scheme to another and even between wireless communication standard schemes. It is for a portable client device MT that must be able to remain connected and reachable within the Internet or other IP-based network even when switched in the. The technique of the present invention is a layer 2 technique suitable for vertical markets and dedicated solutions where the MWAL allows the client device MT to perform vertical handover between wireless communication standard schemes.
