Bistable molecular mechanical devices with a band gap change activated by an electric field for electronic switching, gating, and memory applications |
abstract |
Molecular systems for switches are provided that are activated by an electric field, such as a cross-wire element, or a pair of electrodes to which the molecular system is linked by a linking moiety. The crossed-wire device includes a pair of crossed wires that form a junction where one wire intersects the other wire at an angle other than 0 °, and one or more linker molecules that connect the pair of wires crossed at the junction. The linker molecule includes a molecular system having a band gap change induced by an electric field and thus a change in electrical conductivity, which change occurs through one of the following mechanisms:n n n (1) molecular structure changes;n n n (2) change in extended conjugated bonds through chemical bond changes to change the band gap; orn n n (3) the folding or unfolding of the molecule.n n n In this way, nanometer-scale reversible electronic switches are provided that can be easily assembled to fabricate cross-bar circuits that provide memory, logic, and communication functions. |
