| abstract | Systems, methods and recording apparatuses for providing protected copies of data are disclosed. The system includes a compliant preprocessing unit 110 that performs a one-time copy function of the material prior to providing it to the recording unit 120. The recording unit works with both compliant and non-compliant units or other transmitters that provide protected copying of the data. One or more primary detectors 122 are included for detecting incomplete copy indications and one copy indications in the material, but lacking one-time replication functionality including remarking capabilities. If the recording unit detects one copy indication in the received data, it attempts to establish a secure channel with the sender of the data. If a secure channel is established, the information in the single copy is passed to the sender in the proper operation. If no secure channel is established, the received data is not replicated. |
