abstract | The present invention relates to a process for preparing polycarbonates using polycondensation catalysts which are salts of certain phenanthroline compounds. It has been found that this new class of catalysts provides excellent polymerization rates for the preparation of bisphenol A polycarbonates from melt polymerization of diphenyl carbonate and bisphenol A. Moreover, the catalysts of the present invention have been found to be very selective for significantly reducing the branching side reactions commonly encountered in molten polycarbonate processes, ie, the level of formation of the Fries product. |
