abstract The present invention relates to a lithium metal composite oxide, which is a positive electrode active material of a lithium or lithium ion secondary battery having improved life characteristics and safety, and a method of manufacturing the same. A lithium metal composite oxide capable of occluding and releasing lithium ions is used as a center particle, and a coating layer composed of an amorphous lithium cobalt composite oxide structurally stable and having low reactivity with an electrolyte solution is formed on the surface of the oxide. Since the amorphous lithium cobalt composite oxide has little reaction with the electrolyte, the decomposition of the electrolyte is suppressed and the surface structure of the lithium metal composite oxide, which is the positive electrode active material, is stabilized to improve not only high temperature storage characteristics but also safety and life characteristics.
