Permanently Wettable Superabsorbent Fibers |
abstract |
Provided are methods of making a permanently wettable superabsorbent material. Permanently wet superabsorbent materials made in this way have a residence time of less than 30 seconds and result in a reduction in saline surface tension of less than about 30%. This method involves treating the superabsorbent material with a surfactant solution. Surfactants are used that have at least one reactive group and at least one reactive, hydrophilic group to the superabsorbent material. The surfactant is applied to the superabsorbent material when the functional groups on the superabsorbent material surface are reactivated. Also provided is a disposable absorbent product comprising a permanently wettable, superabsorbent material such as fiber, and a permanently wettable superabsorbent material made by this method. |
