abstract The present invention provides a method of inducing weight loss in an animal by administering to the animal a compound that reduces expression and / or secretion of neuropeptide Y (NPY). The administration can be carried out directly, indirectly or through body fluids. Preferably, administration of this compound has the effect of increasing the malonyl CoA concentration in the animal. Compounds administered according to the invention may be inhibitors of fatty acid synthase (FAS), including substituted α-methylene-β-carboxyl-γ-butyrolactone, or inhibitors of malonyl coenzyme A decarboxylase (MCD) have. The compound is preferably administered in an amount sufficient to reduce the amount and / or duration of expression and / or secretion of NPY to or below the level observed in lean animals. In another preferred embodiment, the administration reduces expression and / or secretion to levels observed in feeding animals or predators, and more preferably, the administration reduces the concentration of NPY to below that of the feeding animals.
