abstract | The present invention relates to an apparatus for sampling a biological fluid and measuring one or more target components in the biological fluid. The device has at least one electrochemical cell having an inner electrode and an outer electrode in a concentrically spaced relationship. In a preferred embodiment, the outer electrode has a cylindrical shape with an open distal end, and the inner electrode has an elongated shape disposed coaxially within the outer electrode and a distal end formed to pass through the skin. The space between the electrodes provides capillary force for the biological fluid present at the open distal end of the outer electrode. Also provided is a system comprising a control device in electrical communication with an electrochemical cell to control the selection and measurement of a target component. Kits are provided that include one or more of the devices and / or systems of the present invention, as well as methods for sampling biological fluid in skin and measuring sampled fluids. |
