A solvent system comprising a solvent that collects blood from the animal, isolates blood cells from the plasma, and separates the plasma from lipids and is substantially stable in hematological and biochemical components, and in reducing the activity level of plasma pathogens. Treating the infected animal by a pathogen with a lipid envelope or membrane, the method comprising contacting for a sufficient time and separating the plasma from the solvent system and then reintroducing the plasma into the animal, thereby separating the dissolved lipids and remaining in the solvent system.
