abstract The present invention relates to a rare earth and magnesium based catalyst system and its use in the polymerization of unsaturated compounds. A feature of the catalyst system of the present invention is that it comprises a compound consisting of the reaction product between rare-earth alcoholate and organo-magnesium. The alcoholate can be prepared in particular by reacting a rare earth halide with an alkali or an alkaline-earth alcoholate. The present invention also relates to a neodymium alcoholate characterized in that the alcoholate is tert-butylate or tert-amylate and does not contain chlorine in its structure. The system of the present invention can be used particularly for the polymerization of ethylene or methyl methacrylate and copolymerization thereof.
