abstract An absorbent article is provided having a central region that is selectively extensible in the longitudinal direction and two terminal regions adjacent to the central region that are selectively extensible in the transverse direction. When used as a garment, such as a disposable diaper or pants-type absorbent garment, the central region provides optional longitudinal (front to back) stretchability in terms of the wearer's crotch, and the two distal regions provide front and rear wearer wear. Provides optional transverse (lateral to lateral) stretch at the posterior lumbar side.
