abstract The present invention includes a lens removal apparatus 30 having a probe 28 penetrating the lens capsule with a system 20 for removing the lens from the mammal's eye. Probe 28 includes a cover 120 which always shields the rotating impeller 128, which is pneumatically operated to propel the cover 120 to the lens removal position. The impeller 128 is pneumatically rotated using a turbine mechanism in the handle for the probe. Washing and aspiration is provided to facilitate removal of lens tissue. The turbine is driven by pulsed air to prevent fine grooves. The purge / protection cap helps remove air bubbles from the system before use and protects the sophisticated impeller during delivery. The operating system is also provided with a foot pedal actuator 32.
