The present invention relates to a method for producing a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery, the method comprising the step of refluxing the lithium salt and cobalt salt in a basic aqueous solution. The cobalt-based positive electrode active material prepared by this manufacturing method is selected from compounds of the following formulas (1) to (3), has a spherical or pseudo-spherical shape, has a particle size of 10 nm to 10 µm and a surface area of 0.1 to 5 m 2 / g.
