titleOfInvention Method for steam pressing composite board having at least one finished surface
abstract In a method of making a composite board product having a finished surface that can be sold directly to the market, the mat is formed of wood fibers treated with a binder. The mat is loaded into a press cavity formed between two press platens. The first press platen is a traditional hot press platen without a port. The traditional platen may be in a smooth shape or in a shape having a predetermined pattern to emboss the finished surface of the product. Another press platen has a steam injection port. The press cavity may be sealed. The mat is fully reinforced. Heat conducted to the first side of the mat in the first press platen evaporates moisture within a predetermined thickness of the mat adjacent to the first side, causing the volume to expand very largely. The expanded volume is vented through the opposite side of the mat to sweep away trapped air from the mat. The steam expansion is vented with air and moisture trapped through the steam injection port in the mat. After sweeping up the trapped air, the press platen is sealed and a predetermined amount of steam from an external source is injected at a temperature and time sufficient to cure the binder into the mat through the steam injection port. An amount of steam from an external source is vented through the steam injection port through the mat before the press cavity is opened.
