abstract | The present invention comprises contacting a toluene-containing reaction stream with a first catalyst under toluene disproportionation conditions to produce an intermediate product stream of para-xylene that is substantially free of ortho-xylene. It relates to a manufacturing method. The first catalyst comprises a crystalline molecular sieve having an ortho-xylene diffusion rate of at least 50 minutes. The first catalyst can be modified by a screening method using a silicon compound or a carbon compound. The intermediate product stream is oxidized to terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate without the need to perform para-xylene purification. |
