abstract The present invention provides borate phosphors suitable for use in plasma display panels, for example phosphors of Al 3 GdB 4 O 12 : Eu structure. It is preferred that the phosphor is a single phase material. The present invention also provides a method for producing the phosphor. The method includes heating a mixture of metallic oxides such as ammonium oxide, gadolinium oxide and europium oxide and boric acid at two different temperatures. The use of excess boric acid in the mixture provides a single phase material and also provides a manufacturing advantage that the process can be completed at low temperatures.
