abstract The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for reducing the generation of acoustic noise in a disk drive. The search is performed to move the head from the initial track on the disc 106 to the destination track in relation to the velocity profile table 304, which provides a sequence of required speeds representing the desired speed as the head decreases to the destination track. During the search, current 300 is applied to the actuator motor to decelerate the head from the initial track with respect to tables 310, 312, 314 and 316 that store the open loop current. Gain convergence block 318 increases the servo gain 236 to provide a smooth transition between the open loop and the closed loop. The head is then decelerated by applying a current in relation to the speed error and the current command value from the current profile table 306 which defines the deceleration of the head using the maximum current.
