Aloe pectins |
abstract |
Pectin is extracted, isolated and identified from the gel and enveloped cell walls of Aloe Vera. Two classes of aloe pectin are obtained: high molecular weight (HMW) pectin and low molecular weight (LMW) pectin. Aloe pectin has a low methoxyl (LM) content. Aloe pectin forms gels in the presence of calcium and these, in particular HMW pectin, form monovalent cationic gels at low temperatures and are restored to solution when applied at room temperature. HMW Aloe pectin-calcium gel is used for controlled release. Monovalent cationic gels are used for the precipitation of antigens and antibodies and matrices for storing drugs. |
