abstract |
The present invention relates to, for example, a dichroic polarizing film prepared by first dissolving a second polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl pyrrolidone or sulfonated polyester in a solvent. The weight ratio of polyvinyl alcohol to second polymer is about 5: 1 to 100: 1. The film is coated on a substrate, dried and stretched in at least one direction of the film. The film contains a dichroic dye such as iodine to form a dichroic polarizer. This polarizer can be used to make an optical polarizer with a multilayer optical film such as a reflective polarizer. This multilayer optical film may contain two or more sets of polyester films, at least one of which is birefringent and may be stretched and oriented. The polyvinyl alcohol / second polymer film and the multilayer optical film can be oriented by stretching both polymer films simultaneously. |
