abstract The present invention relates to a low cost, high sensitivity device and a method for detecting and measuring the amount of analyte present in a medium. The device includes a metallized film 20 on which certain predetermined patterns 25 of analyte-specific receptors are printed. Once the target analyte is attached to a selected region of the plastic film on which the receptor is printed, diffraction of transmitted and / or reflected light occurs through the physical dimension of the analyte and the defined and accurate analyte placement. Visually or optionally, a diffraction image is formed that is easily visible by the sensing device.
