titleOfInvention Radially expandable nickel-titanium surgical stent
abstract A radially expandable surgical stent 10 is provided that is formed of shape memory and / or superelastic material, such as a nickel-titanium alloy. The stent 10 includes a series of corrugated struts 20 spaced apart by a gap 60. Each gap 60 is connected by a support rod 70 at the maximum 60 width portion of the gap 60. Therefore, when the stent 10 expands or contracts radially, the axial expansion or contraction of the stent 10 is prevented. Each strut 20 is formed of a series of substantially linear legs 30 joined together by free bends 40 or attached bends 50. The legs 30 and bends 40, 50 may have an increased thickness 36 to increase resistance to fracture when the stent 10 expands or contracts radially. The stent 10 may be radially shrunk to a diameter less than 1/4 of its radially expanded form when on martensite. When the stent 10 is unloaded or has a load lower than its yield strength and has a temperature above its transition temperature, the stent 10 returns to the shape memory form on the austenite phase. Therefore, the stent 10 can be easily folded and implanted in the lumen of the body and then support the lumen of the body.
