titleOfInvention Floating insulating baffle for high gradient casting
abstract The present invention is a method for shielding a molten metal cooling bath used for directional casting of superalloys from a high temperature furnace environment. In order to substantially cover the surface of the cooling bath, a number of floating ceramic baffles suspended on top of the cooling bath are used. Each baffle member includes hollow ceramic and ceramic sealing means sintered into the hollow member to form a hermetically sealed chamber within the hollow member. The baffle may be positioned during the directional casting process when the mold containing the cast product is lowered into the cooling bath. Also described are ceramic baffles of the present structure.
