A process for preparing an aromatic monomeric or polymeric isocyanate by decomposition with an aromatic monomeric or polymeric isocyanate of formula R 1 (NCO) x and an alcohol of formula R 2 OH, wherein the radical R 2 comprises at least one halogen group.
