Large capacity acid or base generator and method of use |
abstract |
The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for generating acids or bases, for example for chromatographic analysis of ions. In the generation of a base, a cation source, such as a salt, cationic hydroxide or cation exchange resin, is provided to the cation reservoir 10 separated from the base generation chamber 12 by a selective permeable barrier 14. Aqueous stream 21 flows through base generation chamber 12 containing cation exchange material 19. An electric potential is applied between the anode 10 in the cation source reservoir 10 and the cathode 18 in the base generation chamber 12 to electrolytically generate hydroxide ions and dissociate the cation in the reservoir 10. Electrophoresis through the barrier 14 toward the cathode 18 combines with the migrated cations to form cationic hydroxides, which flow from the base generating chamber. |
