The present invention describes a modified retinoblastoma tumor suppressor protein, which has a biological activity at least equivalent to that of the corresponding wild-type retinoblastoma tumor suppressor protein, and in most cases increased activity. As the modified retinoblastoma tumor suppressor protein, for example, the N-terminus having at least one amino acid deletion or one mutation at the N-terminus is modified. In addition, a method of making and using such modified retinoblastoma tumor suppressor protein in an environment to inhibit cell growth is described. Thus, the present invention provides a method for treating a disease, such as cancer, characterized by abnormal cell proliferation, but is not limited to cancer. |
