titleOfInvention Method and Apparatus for Adjusting Corneal Curvature Using a Corneal Ring With Removable Biocompatible Material
abstract An adjustable intrastromal device is provided that is suitable for implantation into the cornea and is formed of a flexible hollow shell 30a that is implantable into the cornea while surrounding the central visual area of the cornea. The implant may be a compartment 117 of various forms of solid biocompatible material, such as solid rings 38 or strands of flexible polymeric material of various shapes and lengths, or alternatively perforated shells 107. In a predetermined amount of fluid, such as saline or gel. The biocompatible filler material is essentially located within the flexible shell to alter its thickness or diameter size, so that the corneal curvature is adjusted to correct for refractive errors. Adjustment of the implant can also be done postoperatively after implantation by selective removal of biocompatible filler material or addition of new material to the device.
