The present invention relates to the use of beta rare earth sulfides as color pigments and methods for their preparation. Beta rare earth sulfides are used wherein the rare earth is lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, samarium or neodymium. Sulfide consists of complete crystals, which form medium sized aggregates not exceeding 1.5 μm. This rare earth sulfide production method is characterized in that the rare earth compound is reacted with at least one sulfide gas selected from hydrogen sulfide or carbon sulfide. Pigments are compositions such as plastics, paints, surface coatings, rubbers, ceramics, glazings, papers, inks, cosmetics, dyes, leathers, laminated coating compositions or other types of compositions based on or produced from one or more inorganic binders.
