abstract |
The present invention relates to genetic mutations in mitochondrial genes isolated into diabetes mellitus. The present invention provides methods for detecting such mutations as diagnostics for diabetes mellitus before or after the onset of clinical symptoms. Examples of specific mutations in mitochondrial ATP synthase 8/6 gene and tRNA Lys gene are shown. The present invention also provides treatment for aberrant function due to mitochondrial genes isolated into diabetes mellitus. Cybrid cells have been described that are useful as a model system for the study of mitochondrial metabolic disorders associated with diabetes mellitus and for the identification of therapeutic compounds for treating such diseases. |
