titleOfInvention | Fatty acid esters of glycolic acid and its salts as permeation enhancers |
abstract | Transdermal drug transport systems that enhance the transport of drugs include one or more glycolic acid C 5 to C 21 fatty acid esters and salts thereof as enhancers. The composition consists of a safe and effective amount of a pharmaceutically active penetrant in an infiltration-enhancing carrier consisting of 0.25-50 wt% fatty acid glycolic acid in a suitable carrier carrier. Such fatty acid glycolic acid ester enhancers are used in a variety of carriers to enhance transdermal transport of active penetrants in free-form or occlusion devices, particularly in transdermal patches in the form of matrices or reservoirs. When used in matrix patch form, the fatty acid glycolic acid ester enhancer is bound to a viscous controlled carrier fluid such as a gel or ointment comprising low cost alkanol and water. In the case of freeform, the enhancers and penetrants may be bound to ointments, lotions, or similar preparations. |
