titleOfInvention Fluid extraction of metals or metalloids
abstract The present invention relates to a method for extracting nonmetals and metal species from solid or liquid materials by exposing the material to a fluid solvent, in particular supercritical CO 2 and a chelating agent. Chelating agents form complexes that are soluble in fluid with the species to allow removal of the species from the material. In a preferred embodiment the extraction solvent is supercritical CO 2 and the chelating agent comprises an organic phosphorus chelating agent, in particular a sulfur-containing organic phosphorus chelating agent (including a chelating agent mixture). Examples of chelating agents include monothiophosphonic acid, dithiophosphonic acid, phosphine sulfite, phosphorothioic acid and mixtures thereof. The method provides an environmentally friendly method of removing metals and nonmetals from industrial waste solutions, in particular acidic solutions. Both complex and supercritical fluids can be regenerated and contaminated species recovered to provide an economical and efficient method.
