Erythromycin, in particular the C-13 substituent R1 (eg, C3-C6 cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl group), is prepared by fermenting a suitable microorganism in the presence of R1COOH. Preferred microorganisms are Saccharopolyora erytraaeim containing bound plasmids capable of biosynthesizing the desired compounds. |
