titleOfInvention | Process for making high denier multilobal filaments of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers and compositions thereof |
abstract | The present invention describes and claims the novel formation process of high denier multilobed filaments of as-spun and heat treated thermotropic liquid crystal polymers. Preferred embodiments include the spinning of some fully aromatic polyesters and polyesteramides and the formation of heat treated octarobe monofilaments. The process comprises (a) heating the thermotropic liquid crystal polymer above its melt transition temperature; (b) passing the molten polymer through an extrusion chamber equipped with an extruded capillary tube having a multilobe cross section to form a multilobe filament; (c) involves winding the filament with a suitable draw-down. The filaments thus formed are characterized by at least 50 denier / filament (dpf) and their cross section having essentially constant molecular orientation. In the final selection step, the filaments are heat treated at the stage to form filaments that exhibit good tensile properties. Both the spinned and heat treated filaments are characterized by a remarkably good tensile property comparable to that of round filaments. Most importantly, the multilobe filaments of the present invention are characterized by better adhesion than conventional round filaments. |
