titleOfInvention Liquid Crystal Display Projection System Using Multi-layer Optical Film Polarizer
abstract Liquid crystal display (LCD) projection system 50 includes projection panel 52, light source 56, and reflector 58. The projection panel includes an LCD 60, a polarizer 64 on one side of the LCD and a reflective polarizer 62 on the other side. The reflective polarizer is a multilayer stack of pairs 44 of adjacent material layers 41, 43. Each of the layer pairs exhibits a difference in refractive index between adjacent layers in a first direction in the plane of the reflective polarizer, and a refractive index between adjacent layers in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction in the plane of the reflective polarizer. Doesn't basically represent a car. A quarter wave plate 66 is fixed to the reflective polarizer. Any of the light rays from the light source pass through the reflective polarizer onto the LCD or reflect back toward the light source depending on its polarization. The light reflected by the reflective polarizer is reflected back by the reflector towards the LCD. The use of quarter wave plates and reflectors to aid circulation is generally considered to be a waste of light, but at the same time reduces heat generation within the LCD.
