A battery comprising battery cells assembled and isolated in the form of a lightweight structural panel. Each cell includes a honeycomb structure 44 where each film-like layer in the honeycomb structure is an electrode stack. Each electrode stack 20 includes an elongated anode, an elongated separator, and an elongated cathode. The separator is moistened with an electrolyte solution to facilitate the electrochemical reaction. The electrochemical reaction can be an electrochemical reaction of NiMH 2 cells and NiH cells, Li + cells, NiCd cells, lead acid cells, or any other suitable electrochemical reaction. Alternatively, the battery cell may be composed of a foamed positive electrode, a foamed separator, and a foamed negative electrode. In any embodiment, the present invention stores electrochemical energy in a structure in which a plurality of gaps 45 are formed so that the structure is relatively robust but lightweight. |
