abstract The label 100 for identification has a dense matrix of machine-readable cells 101-109 containing information and containing a BCH error correction code. The cell can be binary, ternary (gray level) and have more levels or colors can be used. These labels are easily detectable and accurate to read because in a single compound image, many of which are included outdoors when poor lighting and contamination impair ideal conditions. Thus, when some (typically four) feature cells 101, 102, 103, 104 per label are identified, they are left to be used as locators indicating position, direction and value on the scale of the gray level used for the symbol. The perimeter of the gray or white label can be used to determine the internal label illumination change as a reading step. One or more portable digital cameras capture the images and relay them to the analyzer and the decoder.
