abstract The present invention relates to a catalyst composition for preparing light alpha olefins by oligomerizing ethylene, the catalyst composition comprising aluminum hydrous containing zirconia compounds selected from the group consisting of acetal and ketal, chlorine or bromine It is prepared by mixing with an aluminum hydrocarbyl compound selected from the group consisting of carbyl compounds and an aluminum hydrocarbyl compound selected from tris- (hydrocarbyl) -aluminum compounds. By adding the tris- (hydrocarbyl) -aluminum compound, the activity of the catalyst composition was greatly increased. The present invention also claims a method for producing light alpha olefins by oligomerizing ethylene.
