abstract | The present invention relates to new polyquinoline polymers as well as new methods of preparing polyquinoline polymers using novel monomer combinations. The polyquinoline polymer consists of one or more quinoline nuclei and one or more ether bonds and contains repeating units having a fluoro group or a hydroxy group or a combination of fluoro and hydroxy groups as terminal groups. Each fluoro group provides a monomer containing two fluoro groups activated by a quinoline nucleus, and the diol monomer is provided in the form of its bis-oxide salt or in the presence of a base capable of deprotonating the diol, The difluoro monomer and the diol monomer are reacted together in a bipolar solvent to form a polyquinoline polymer. In another embodiment, the polyquinoline polymer of the present invention is formed by reacting a fluorohydroxy monomer containing a quinoline nucleus having one activated fluoro group and one hydroxy group in the presence of a base and a bipolar solvent.
