abstract A method for enabling a dehydration reaction in which a target compound can be selectively obtained in high yield by suppressing the generation of by-products in regeneration from an aromatic amide compound to a corresponding aromatic nitrile compound is provided. Furthermore, there is provided a method for producing an aromatic nitrile compound that reduces the number of steps in the dehydration reaction and significantly improves the reaction rate even under a pressure close to normal pressure. Further, the above production method is applied to a method for producing a carbonate ester, thereby realizing an efficient method for producing a carbonate ester. The above problem is solved by a method for producing an aromatic nitrile compound that includes a dehydration reaction for dehydrating an aromatic amide compound, and a method for producing an aromatic nitrile compound using diphenyl ether in the dehydration reaction.
