titleOfInvention | Early lung cancer detection by dna methylation phenotyping of sputum-derived cells |
abstract | In certain embodiments, disclosed herein is a method for detecting lung cancer. This method involves the characterization of cells derived from human sputum, an important tissue replacement and source of cancerous upper respiratory cells early in the onset of lung cancer 5 . The method involves staining the extracted cells with a fluorescent reporter that produces a specific pattern in the nuclei of labeled cells that can be visualized under a light microscope. This pattern relates to a type of epigenetic encoding of DNA known as DNA methylation that changes in certain cells of the lung during cancer development compared to normal respiratory cells. |
