abstract | To provide an industrially feasible purification method for a polyethylene glycol compound having one carboxyl group in which wastes such as adsorbents and ion exchange resins are not produced with good efficiency and purity. As an aqueous solution of a polyethylene glycol compound, the aqueous solution whose pH is 8-11 is prepared. The aqueous solution and the mixed organic solvent are mixed at a temperature of 15°C or higher and 50°C or lower to separate the organic layer and the aqueous layer. The ratio of the organic solvent I in the mixed organic solvent is 25-60 mass %, and the ratio of the organic solvent II is 75-40 mass %.
