abstract The present invention relates to the steps of conveying alumina powder into an agglomerator, the agglomerator having a shaft with mixers, the mixers capable of displacing the alumina powder along the shaft, being displaced along the shaft to form shaped alumina. and to a method for producing high strength shaped alumina by spraying a liquid binder on the alumina powder according to the method, and calcining the shaped alumina. The shaped alumina is prepared to have a loose bulk density of at least 1.20 g/ml, a surface area of less than 10 m 2 /g, less than 5 ppm of individual metals and impurities totaling less than 9 ppm, and/or a crushing strength of greater than 12,000 psi.
