abstract | A method of making an aerosol-forming rod (2020) having a cross-sectional porosity distribution value and a predetermined value of cross-sectional porosity for use as an aerosol-forming substrate of a heated aerosol-generating article (2000, 2001, 2002), the method comprising: a specified width and a specified thickness; providing a continuous sheet of aerosol-forming material (2) having forming, cutting the continuous rod into a plurality of individual rods, determining values representative of cross-sectional porosity and cross-sectional porosity distribution for at least one individual rod, and cross-sectional porosity and cross-sectional porosity distribution values of subsequent rods manufacturing the aerosol-forming rod by controlling one or more manufacturing process parameters such that they are within predetermined values. The predetermined value of cross-sectional porosity is preferably in the range of about 0.15 to 0.45 and the predetermined value of cross-sectional porosity distribution is preferably in the range of about 0.04 to 0.22. The predetermined values are selectable to optimize the deliverable aerosol for different types of heated aerosol-generating articles. In preferred embodiments, the continuous sheet may be crimped prior to the assembling step. |
