abstract | Freeze dried nests and methods of using them are described herein. In various embodiments, the freeze-dried nest is configured to support one or more containers each supporting one or more substances within the interior space of the freeze-dried nest. The interior space may be in fluid communication with the exterior of the freeze-dried nest through one or more vent holes extending through the surface of the freeze-dried nest. Each of the one or more vent holes has a corresponding sealing element configured to selectively form a hermetic seal within the vent hole, so that a controlled environment can be maintained within the interior space when the ambient conditions surrounding the freeze drying nest are not freeze drying conditions. The one or more sealing elements may be actuated while the lyophilized nest is placed in the sealed lyophilizer by recessing the sealing elements into corresponding vent holes to form a hermetic seal. |
