In one embodiment, the present invention provides a method of entrapment of at least one acid gas into the composition, releasing the gas from the composition, and then regenerating the composition for reuse. The method is: (a) capturing at least one acid gas by contacting it with a capture composition comprising at least one salt of a carboxylic acid and at least one water-miscible non-aqueous solvent; (b) releasing said at least one acid gas by adding at least one protic solvent or agent to said composition; and (c) regenerating the collection composition by partially or completely removing the added protic solvent or agent from the composition Including performing sequentially. Optionally, the collection composition comprises at least one salt of a carboxylic acid, and at least one water-miscible non-aqueous solvent, and further comprises water or other protic solvent. In another aspect, the composition of the present invention comprises at least one protic solvent or agent, and the release of the at least one acid gas is effected by heating or stripping the composition with a flow of air. The method is typically applied to the capture and subsequent release of carbon dioxide and provides a convenient and simple method using inexpensive consumer products and significant advantages over the prior art. |
