abstract | A method of recovering organic heteroatom compounds from a hydrocarbon feedstock includes feeding the hydrocarbon feedstock and an aqueous solvent into a contactor to form an extract mixture of the hydrocarbon feedstock and the aqueous solvent. The hydrocarbon feedstock includes hydrocarbons and organic heteroatom compounds. The aqueous solvent comprises an ionic liquid formed from pressurized carbon dioxide and water. The pressure and temperature of the extraction mixture are set to adjust the aqueous solvent together to selectively form a solvent complex with the at least one organic heteroatom compound. The solvent complex is then extracted from the extraction mixture in the contactor into a recovery vessel. By controlling the recovery temperature of the recovery vessel, the recovery pressure of the recovery vessel, or both, the solvent complex is decomposed into carbon dioxide and at least one organic heteroatom compound. The organic heteroatom compound is recovered from the recovery vessel. |
